House Signs

2 points per person

Always look up. Only then you’ll be able to notice all of those sophisticated picture signs above doorways. Most of them are centuries old and the concept of Prague’s house signs itself dates to the 14th century. If you’re intrigued come and take a walk of the Old Town or the Lesser Town. Most symbols represent domesticated or exotic animals, e.g.: The House At the Three Ostriches, The House At the Black Elephant. Other signs symbolized the name and the profession of the family that lived in that particular house. Unfortunately, during the reign of the Marie Therese (the archduchess of Austria and Holy Roman Empress of the Habsburg Dynasty) the house signs were replaced by number signs. Až do doby Marie Terezie sloužila místo popisných čísel znamení. Naučte se číst tajemství malostranských a staroměstských domovních znamení, která vypovídala o povolání, či jméně jejich obyvatel.
